Teaching
Experience:
Teaching Assistant, GEO 013 (3 quarters)
Instructor of Record, GEO 013 (2 quarters)
University Teaching Certificate - March 2024.
My experience with this course has shaped my perspective as an instructor and revealed my core teaching values of accessibility and enduring impact. I am passionate about working with non-major students in this class and making the material relevant to them and their future plans – what can these students learn in my classroom that they can apply beyond it? My goal is for students to leave my classroom with (1) a sense that they can understand scientific topics and (2) increased overall scientific literacy through skills such as reading charts.
As the Instructor of Record in Summer 2022, I had the opportunity to explore ways to make more connections to the students. One strategy I employed was to remove exams from the course and focus on ways that students could connect their interests with material in the course, especially for final projects. Examples of final projects included: a video game on how to build a habitable planet (computer science major) and a business pitch for an asteroid mining company (business major). I have also pedagogical training pertaining to course development, classroom engagement, and teaching presence via the University Teaching Certificate program, and am eager to continue developing my skills and perspective as an instructor.

DEI
Experience:
EPSci Graduate Student Association DEI Representative (June 2022 - June 2024)
W+OCP Virtual Programming Chair (April 2022 - October 2023)
I am highly interested in both the recruitment and retention of (multi)marginalized students to graduate programs. Specifically, I have organized the annual Women+ of Color Project conference which specifically targets underrepresented minority women and gender minorities for an intensive workshop about applying to and thriving in graduate school. The W+OCP team is highly passionate about getting extra support to historically underrepresented groups and helping them to find and develop the tools and communities to have a successful graduate school experience.
Additionally, in my own department, I was elected to serve as the DEI representative for two years in a row. In this role, I both advise the departmental graduate student association about DEI-related issues and liase with the faculty DEI committee. My main project that I am currently working on is to have one of our building's bathrooms designated as gender neutral.
